What we do : The need
"A survey conducted by MORI found that 44% of people had a problem which they would have liked help with in year 2002/03. Of these only 61% of those sought help, indicating that there were over 7.25 million people in Britain with problems who had no help at all." Home Office, 2006.
At some point in our lives we all need help. No matter what problems and challenges we face, access to the best information and support can help us through times of crisis and distress.
Fortunately, there are thousands of organisations and services in the UK that we can turn to. Ranging from national charities and government bodies to local trusts and voluntary sector groups, they provide support on hundreds of issues including health, social care, housing, employment and benefits.
Yet finding the most relevant source of help can often be confusing, frustrating and time consuming. As a result, millions of people each year don’t get the help they need, despite the wealth of support available, because they don’t know where to start.
At StartHere we believe every citizen has the right to access services and find organisations that can help them in their time of need. We also believe that technology has a significant role to play in tackling social exclusion. The StartHere service provides a simple way of engaging digitally excluded groups with the benefits that technology can bring while simultaneously addressing their social needs.
